I’m sure I’m not the only one who already feels like Peter Capaldi has already been the Doctor for a long time now. By the end of “Deep Breath” his performance felt both familiar and fresh at the same time. I’m not sure what more one could ask for from a transition than that very feeling I just described. I can’t go so far as to say that the transition has been seamless; to do so would be ignoring how dissatisfied I was with “The Time of the Doctor,” but I will say that on this back-end of the change, on the transition from one Doctor I liked immensely to one I was giddily excited for did not disappoint. ‘Orphan Black’ Season 2, Episode 1 Reaction
Orphan Black remains the only show on television that is worth watching on the strength of its lead actor alone. Let me be quite clear here: I love the concept of the show, the writing, overall production value, and supporting cast (especially Jordan Gavaris) are all of high quality. But even if I weren’t an incurable SciFi geek endlessly fascinated by the science and ethics of human cloning, I would still watch this show strictly because of Tatiana Maslany. This episode was actually pretty weak in my opinion, but it didn’t feel that way because Maslany’s so much fun to watch. Each one of her characters is so unique I continually forget that she’s playing each of them. It seems almost secondary to mention how good an actor she is on a basic level, never mind the juggling act
I don’t have much more to say on this other than I’m glad its finally back and that I’m exceedingly glad Helena is still alive.
Top 10 Performances of 2013
1. Adele Exarchopoulos: Blue Is the Warmest Color
Some actors have “that face,” other actors have “those eyes.” Exarchopolous has both. Her’s was not the most polished performance this year, or the most mature, but it is the one that effected me the most emotionally. It’s the one that stuck in my head and refused to leave. I don’t think it sentimental for one to give marks for that: cinema, by it’s very nature is an art of manipulation of the emotions of the viewer, and actors are the vessels through which the viewers emphasize with the characters.
